How to get, replace, or correct a Social Security card

You can use a Social Security card as an ID, to get a job, or collect benefits. Learn how to replace or correct a card. And find out how to get one for the first time for yourself or a baby.

Replace a Social Security card

Replacing a Social Security card is free. You may be able to request a replacement online or in person.

If you live in Alaska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, or a U.S. territory, follow this process instead:

  1. Learn what documents you will need to get a replacement card for an adult or child, citizen or non-citizen.

  2. Print and fill out the application, Form SS-5.

  3. Find your local Social Security office’s address. Bring your completed Form SS-5 and supporting documents to your local office.

Correct a Social Security card or get one for the first time

There is no charge for correcting your Social Security card or getting one for the first time. Follow this process:

  1. Learn what documents you will need to correct a card or get an original card for an adult or child, citizen or non-citizen.

  2. Print and fill out the application, Form SS-5.

  3. Find your local Social Security office’s address. Then, bring your completed Form SS-5 and supporting documents to your local office.

Get a Social Security card if you live outside the U.S.

To get a Social Security number or card if you do not have a U.S. mailing address, select the country where you live and contact its Federal Benefits Unit. If the country you are in is not listed, contact your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate

Get a Social Security number for a new baby

The easiest time to apply for a Social Security number for your baby is at the hospital after they are born. Request one when you give the information for your child's birth certificate. If you do not want to request one in the hospital, follow the steps above to request a number and original card for a child.

Your child will need their own Social Security number so you can:

  • Claim them as a dependent on your income tax return
  • Open a bank account in their name
  • Get medical coverage for them
  • Apply for government services for them
